Posted by Larissa Place on Mon, Oct 12, 2015 @ 15:10 PM

The American Nuclear Society (ANS) Oak Ridge/Knoxville section is collaborating with regional and national organizations to host activities in Oak Ridge and Knoxville, TN, that will be featured for the 2015 Nuclear Science Week observance.

The NSW Big Event will take place at the Knoxville Convention Center in downtown Knoxville, TN beginning Thursday, October 22, and ending Saturday, October 24, 2015. Admission to this three-day event is free and open to all who have an interest in nuclear science and energy.

The strong regional presence of a wide variety of nuclear science and energy companies – including Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Y-12 Complex, Provision Proton Therapy – provides a rich culture and atmosphere of nuclear science research and industry. The focus of the Big Event this year will center around the theme “Bringing the community and world together through nuclear science.” A strong focus of this event will be on education for students, teachers, young professionals and the public about nuclear science activities in the region and internationally.

Attendees will partake in various exhibits, demonstrations, and panel discussions on various topics including:

  • “Historical Look at Nuclear Developments”
  • “What’s New in Nuclear”
  • “Around the world in 80 minutes: A look at nuclear industries around the world, including emerging economies and sustainable power”
  • “Medical Applications in Nuclear Science and Engineering”

The 3-day event will also feature a keynote speaker, movie screening of “Pandora’s Promise”, and outdoor information tables.

Nuclear Science Week (NSW) is a national and international, broadly observed week-long celebration to focus local, regional, national and international interest on all aspects of nuclear science. NSW takes place each year on the third week of October, and each day of NSW provides for learning about the contributions, innovations and opportunities that can be found by exploring nuclear science.

During the week, educators, students, employers and the community participate in a national recognition of how nuclear science plays a vital role in the lives of Americans – and the world. Activities during the week are intended to build awareness of the contributions of the nuclear science industry and those who work in it every day.

A number of local events take place all over the nation during Nuclear Science Week. It is celebrated in cities big and small, and any community is invited to get involved and host a Nuclear Science Week celebration. Each year a different city is chosen to host a “Big Event”, and smaller celebrations take place throughout the country.

Nuclear Science Week invites people from all over the globe to “Get to Know Nuclear” and participate in a week-long celebration that advances education, stimulates participation and generates communication that provides insight and visibility for the achievements of the nuclear sciences.
